Annual Statistic Reports 2016

Death Penalty

The report aims to compile and present reliable data on the use of the death penalty in India. It seeks to address the lack of transparency and gaps in official statistics. It also provides a comprehensive overview to improve understanding and public awareness of capital punishment.

Process

The report adopts a multi-source data collection methodology in light of the absence of reliable official statistics on the death penalty in India. It collates information from trial and appellate court judgments, official data obtained from prison departments, responses to Right to Information (RTI) applications, and credible news media reports. While acknowledging that these sources are not exhaustive and carry certain limitations, the report seeks to provide the most comprehensive account possible within these constraints.
