Art in Prison
These include pottery, fine arts, a variety of musical genres from parai to light film music, and theatre. In its first phase of implementation, the programme involved 22 art practitioners as facilitators for 35 incarcerated students in the men’s prison. The pilot programme concluded late last year with a showcase of the group’s creations within Puzhal Prison and displays of their work travelling to the Chennai Photo Biennale. Its ongoing second phase has expanded to include Puzhal’s Women’s Special Prison. This expansion has seen participation from 16 women, led by 4 facilitators practicing visual and theatrical art forms.
