We conducted the first comprehensive empirical research on the socio-economic profile, lived experience, and mental health status of death row prisoners in the country. As of December 2025, there were 574 persons (550 men and 24 women) living on death row. For the third consecutive year (2023-25), the Supreme Court did not confirm any death sentences. In 2025, the Supreme Court acquitted 10 people, the highest number since we started recording data on the death penalty in India. These findings come from our Annual Statistics reports which our team has produced annually since 2016. The Annual Statistics reports are considered the definitive resource on the death penalty in India. Based on our experience we have been involved in developing regional standards for legal representation in death penalty cases.
