Death penalty
We conducted the first comprehensive empirical research on the socio-economic profile, lived experience, and mental health status of death row prisoners in the country. As of December 2025, there were 574 persons (550 men and 24 women) living on death row. For the third consecutive year (2023-25), the Supreme Court did not confirm any death sentences and acquitted 10 people, the highest number since we started maintaining annual death penalty statistics in 2016. These findings come from our Annual Statistics report which has been rigorously documented and annually produced since 2016, and is considered the definitive resource on the death penalty in India.
