We believe that the criminal justice system needs to ensure the highest quality of legal representation when using such a punishment. We give effect to the constitutional commitment to equal justice through our representation work in death sentence cases. From intensive defence litigation to proactively leading the way in mitigation investigations, we ensure our clients are supported by a strong defence team. Our interdisciplinary approach to legal defence brings together criminal law practitioners, forensic experts, legal researchers, social workers, psychologists, and anthropologists. Since our team’s beginnings in 2014, we have represented 168 persons on death row securing 34 acquittals and 53 commutations. Notable contributions also include involvement in landmark Supreme Court cases that have shaped criminal law jurisprudence such as Vasanta Sampat Dupare v Union of India (August 2025), Manoj and ors. v. State of Madhya Pradesh (May 2022), In re: human conditions in 1382 prisons (December 2018), Accused X v. State of Maharashtra (April 2019), and Rahul and ors. v. State of NCT of Delhi (November 2022). Our litigation has contributed to the development of death penalty jurisprudence. Through regular communication with our clients, we have also created Capital Letters (a digital exhibit) based on the country’s only archive of letters authored by those sentenced to death.
