Marking the release of The Square Circle Clinic’s latest publication, Legal Aid for Undertrial Prisoners: Report of the Fair Trial Programme in Pune and Nagpur (2019-2024), Justice Vikram Nath delivered a keynote speech titled, Between Custody and Constitution: Field Lessons in Delivering Fair Trial Rights on November 7, 2025.
Justice Nath emphasised on the concerning concentration of undertrials in prison and how the current quality of legal aid in India compounds this problem. He urged that it is the duty of law schools in India to treat legal aid clinics as places where justice comes alive and not as an act of charity. Highlighting the impact of the Fair Trial Programme’s intervention, he pointed out that our work demonstrates how justice does not end at the courtroom door; rather continues in the lived experience of those who depend upon it.
